Great Expectations by Charles Dickens
The story of Pip, a boy who grew to manhood with dreams of becoming a gentleman. He falls in love with Estella, who has learned to use her beauty to torture men. She marries, and is ill- treated in the marriage. Pip, whose dreams are dashed returns to honest work. Eventually, both having learned their lessons, find each other in romance.
Considered one of Dicken's best novels, it clearly demonstrates his command of words, and his understanding of human nature.
